Azure SAP HANA compatibility

SAP HANA Large instance in Azure is now in “sunset mode” and new customers cannot use this type of deployment.

To deploy new HANA installation one of the many Azure VM SKU can be used. The biggest one (as of Jan, 28, 2022) with spectacular 24TB(!) of RAM and 896 vCPU (including HT) – with 16 sockets to the smallest one with ~120GB and 16 vCPU (incl. HT).

Full list of supported VM sizes can be found on the below list where “Microsoft Azure” can be found at the list of vendors:

https://www.sap.com/dmc/exp/2014-09-02-hana-hardware/enEN/#/solutions?filters=v:deCertified

Using Azure VM brings standardization for the whole (SAP) environment, and for example the same Azure VM agents including monitoring and backup can be used.

Few observations:

  • make sure you have assigned quota for your SAP, and especially HANA (big VMs) deployments
  • quota doesn’t mean that there will be space in Azure to create your VMs (especially with proximity groups, specific AZ, etc)
  • for big SAP VM it can take a while to start and stop (deallocate system), it can looong take minutes – so be patient
  • in case of issue always open MSFT support case, great team is working there and I am sure they will be happy to help

Nginx configuration for joplin note taking app

Introduction Joplin may not be the most perfect note-taking application, but it is open-source, well-known, has a long release history, works on multiple operating systems, and supports plugins. It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough and highly usable. In case of this type of application, it is important to have …

podcast

All podcast applications I have tested were quite OK(ish) – but I have always struggled with organizing podcasts, creating playlists, etc. It has always been challenging. Therefore, for me, it is more convenient to download podcasts as MP3s and manage them myself (in VLC, for example). There are many ways to do that, but my favorite …
